Go out on a full stomach
Eating a healthy meal before you go out is essential to avoiding hangovers. When your stomach is full you won’t get drunk as fast, and usually you won’t drink as fast either. It has an effect on both mind and body. This also gives fuel for your body to recover from the alcohol.

Don’t mix alcohols
Mixing different kinds of alcohols such as beer, liquor, wine and whiskey, is a disaster ready to happen. Not only will is cause painful hangovers, but your body reacts different to each kind of alcohol. And everyone has that friend that had a little bit of every drink one night and got really sick, or it may have been you.

Stay away from sweet drinks
Sugar is a killer when it comes to drinking. The sugar can cause a spike and crash in your blood sugar level, and therefore spike the intensity and probability of getting a hangover. Next time don’t have too many Rum and Cokes, Daiquiris, Margaritas or any other high sugar mixed drinks.

Take some supplements before going out
Nutrition is essential to avoiding a hangover. It has been known that our bodies get depleted of nutrients when drinking alcohol, so if have some Vitamin C and B hanging around, take it before you go out. In fact, it is theorized that a depletion in Vitamin B causes hangovers.

Hydrate
Drink as much water or healthy fluids as possible. Stay away from sugar-loaded drinks. It sometimes is hard to drink water while you’re out, but at the least drink a couple glasses before you go to bed.

Get a maximum amount of sleep
The less sleep you get, the harder it is to avoid a hangover. Shoot to get a bare minimum of 6 hours of sleep, preferably 8 or more hours. Resting gives your body more time to recover from the alcohol.

Take a hangover product
There are many products out there made for avoiding hangovers. Believe it or not, some of them give excellent results so that you don’t have to wake up with a hangover. Just to name two companies with excellent product reviews is Zaca and Chaser.

If you combine a few of these ways of avoiding hangovers, you will increase the probability of never having a hangover. A few of these ways will eliminate the hangover on its own, such as hangover products.

Ayurveda Effective Therapies to Solve Hangover Problem

Hangover is the name given to the heady sensation that follows a heavy alcoholic consumption. Generally, hangovers are felt when the mind returns to its proper faculties, i.e. the intoxication has worn off. Hangovers are felt mostly in the mornings following an alcoholic session the previous night. The general characteristics of hangovers are a feeling of nausea, vomiting, heaviness in the stomach, headache, sensitivity to light and noise, excessive thirst and lethargy. The symptoms may widely vary from one person to another. In people with low resistance to alcohol, there can be diarrheas, fevers and pains in the joints and muscles due to a hangover.

The alcohol that humans normally consume is ethyl alcohol. In its pure form it is a colorless liquid which is very easily miscible in water. For this reason, no sooner does the alcohol hit the stomach than it gets dissolved in the blood stream. The presence of the alcohol in the blood reduces the nervous impulses. This is what leads to the intoxicated feeling when one is drunk. But if the feeling continues until the next morning, then the person will suffer from a hangover.

Just indulging in drinking binges is not enough; it is very essential to know how to tackle a potential hangover. Not only will a hangover spoil the day for you, but it will also wreak havoc on your health. When one drinks, there is a loss of water and essential nutrients from the body. Hence, along with fighting a hangover, the person must also replenish the lost nutrients.

Ayurveda has developed several effective therapies to solve the hangover problem since the time when the maharajas used to drink alcohol. The following are some of the very effective therapies that have been in use:-

1. First and foremost, one should never drink on an empty stomach. It is ideal to drink after or with some filling food. That is why the concept of appetizers and starters has arisen. The food to be taken in accompaniment with alcohol must be ideally a fatty food. This will increase the vata and help the body to get prepared for the alcohol better. Even otherwise, the fried food will stick to the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract and retard the assimilation of alcohol in the blood stream.

2. Water is the best natural therapy that can be used to fight a hangover. Ideally, a person must drink as many glasses of water as they have had of the alcoholic drink. The water can be had early in the next morning to assuage the effects of the alcohol.

3. Citrus fruits are very beneficial in fighting hangovers. A glass of juice of a fresh orange or lemon, sweetened with sugar is good. Also, bananas are effective. Bananas contain fructose (a carbohydrate which helps the body to regain its lost energy) and potassium, which is one of the nutrients voided by the frequent urination that alcohol causes. Kiwi fruits are also rich in proteins.

4. Caffeine and chocolate have positive effects on a hangover. After an alcoholic binge, chomp on a bar of chocolate or drink a cup of coffee. This will help you regain your nerve impulses. Though, too much of coffee could eliminate the nutrients from the body further. Hence, not more than one cup of coffee must be taken.

5. The morning after the alcoholic binge, have a breakfast of two sunny-sides up omelettes with bread. Eggs provide energy to the body and build up the protein content. Also, eggs can help remove the accumulated toxins in the body. Have the omelettes with toast so that the bread will also provide the requisite amount of starch.

6. If there is constipation in the morning along with the hangover, then any over-the-counter medicine can be taken in order to stop the constipation. Peppermint and chamomile tea can be consumed in order to stop the constipation.

7. Ayurveda uses therapies such as cold irrigations on the head (Shirodhara) and applying cold packs on the body to reduce hangovers. These methods have been found to work excellently. Alternatively, cold foods such as ice-creams are also prescribed to people suffering from hangovers.

For people who wish to get their hangover problems solved, Ayurveda prescribed the following medicines:-

a) Brihat vata Chintamani rasa, of which 200 milligrams must be taken at bedtime

b) Vata Vidhwansa rasa, to be taken in the same dosage as above

c) Brahmi ghritam, of which 30 ml must be taken at bedtime with milk and

d) Sarvatha choorna, of which 5 grams are to be taken with either bread or milk at bedtime.

Some people combat hangovers by having another peg of the same drink in the morning. How this works is not known, but having some more alcohol helps to reduce the effects of the hangover. However, it is advisable not to go for a strong peg in the morning. Have a mild alcoholic cocktail such as a Bloody Mary or a Virgin Mary. The salty content of these cocktails can reduce the effects of the hangover to a large extent.s

What is a hangover?

Although there is no precise scientific definition, we all know it when we have it. In general, an alcohol hangover involves two or more the following symptoms: headache, nausea, diarrhea, lack of appetite, shakiness, feeling tired and an overall feeling of being unwell. Simply put, it feels like the “flu”.
There are numerous changes in the balance of hormones, neurotransmitters and other biological substances in the body. This neurobiological imbalance leads not only to the symptoms described above, but also in a rapid heart rate and increased work load on the heart. The latter is responsible for increased cardiac mortality.

There is a diffuse slowing of the brain waves as seen on EEG several hours 16 hours after all alcohol has cleared the body. Neuromuscular performance is also impaired long after alcohol is undetectable in blood.

Socioeconomic Consequences

Alcohol hangovers are not just a nuisance, and their socio-economic impact is not insignificant. In the U.S. alone, the cost of alcohol use is a staggering $148 billion dollars each year, much of it due to work missed or decreased occupational productivity due to hangover.

Hangovers account for an average annual opportunity cost of $2000 per working adult. Contrary to popular misconception, light to moderate drinkers account for the most work related costs.

Causes of Hangover

Hangovers are a poorly understood clinical entity despite their existence since ancient times. Scientists now believe the cause is multi-factorial and their occurrence is not solely related to the amount of alcohol consumed.

Other factors include empty stomach, lack of sleep, psychosocial factors, increased physical activity while drinking, and dehydration. Persons in otherwise poor health have a greater likelihood of developing a hangover. Children of alcoholic parents report greater hangover symptoms than the children of non-alcoholics.

Beware, 6 drinks in an 80 kg male and 3-5 drinks in a 60 kg woman will almost always lead to hangover. Simply put, not drinking enough to get drunk will dramatically reduce the likelihood of hangover.

Some people believe that a hangover is nature’s way of punishment to prevent future drinking. However, studies have found that hangovers do not deter drinking. In contrast, it may encourage the person to drink more, also known as an “eye opener”. One study showed that many people with hangover, drink more alcohol to reverse its effects.

Prevention of Hangover

The only thing that can absolutely guarantee a hangover will not occur is to avoid drinking. Most of us ignore this warning.

1. Ladies, don’t try to act macho and compete with the guys. I am not being sexist here. Just that biologically speaking, men can tolerate more alcohol than women, even if they are of same height and weight.

2. Do not mix different types of drinks. Avoid drinking on empty stomach. Food in the stomach prevents rapid absorption of alcohol into the blood stream. Thus, the more food you have before and during drinking, the less the impact of alcohol.

As much as possible, drink “clear” alcohols. One study showed that for the same amount of alcohol ingested, 33% of bourbon drinkers suffered hangovers, compared to only 3% of those who drank vodka. Brandy, red wine, tequila and rum are more likely to cause hangover than white wine, vodka and gin.

3. Dark or colored alcohols have small quantities of other toxic substances or congeners that are created during the fermentation process. Congeners are implicated in the causation of hangovers. These congeners include methyl alcohol, aldehydes, histamine, tannins, iron, lead and cobalt.

4. Drink plenty of water. Make sure to drink water or other fluids such as apple juice or Gatorade before going to sleep, in order to prevent dehydration.

5. Do not drink while using sauna. Saunas and alcohol do not mix well together andlead to increased health risk.
When You Have a Hangover

It is never too late to start damage control. The preventative measures described above are still helpful.

Do not drink more in order to reverse the hangover. It will make matters worse.
Drink plenty of water or other fluids but avoid orange or grapefruit juice. Many people drink coffee; its efficacy has not been studied but many people recommend avoiding it as its diuretic effect may further worsen the fluid imbalance in the body.

Eat light, nutritious food and stay away from greasy, fatty foods. I recommend bananas and yogurt etc.

Avoid sauna to relieve hangover. It may sound appealing, but can have adverse effects on your heart and blood pressure.
