A hangover cure

Posted on 03 November 2010 by admin

So the other day I was watching a show where a startup company was looking to bring to market a hangover patch (similar in concept to the nicotine patch) which would pump your body full of vitamins while you consumed alcohol, all with the purpose of reducing or eliminating a hangover. I was intrigued. Now, I have heard of hangover pills but they require too much work and with the amount of liquid you consume while boozing you are bound to be peeing out most of the beneficial ingredients. With a patch, you slap it on, the vitamins get absorbed throughout your skin all the while you can pound back drink after drink without worry. This makes sense.

After a search on the Internet I found a company called Zaca which is already marketing this kick ass concept. The cost is $19.99 for a 6 patches, with discounts available for larger purchases. At over $3 per patch it isn’t exactly cheap but it can be less than the price of even one drink at the bar. I figured if I was going to buy 12 drinks to make me feel terrible, the cost of one drink to make me feel better would totally be worth it.

After no deliberation I immediately went ahead and placed my order. Within minutes, I received an email from Mark of Zaca with some immediate, pressing concerns. Since I live in Canada and the product was shipping from the US he wanted to give me the heads up that my order may not arrive for St. Patty’s Day, which was just around the corner. Right then and there I could tell that I had made the right decision.

Approximately a week later (just missing my St. Patty’s boozefest) I was excited to receive my hangover patches in the mail. Of course, it didn’t take long to put those patches to a good challenge as the next Friday was yet another piss up. After cracking my first bevy I slapped a patch on my left shoulder and proceeded to party like it was 1999. An entertaining night flew by and after a solid dozen or so drinks I found myself stumbling home with a big slice in hand coming to a crash in my bed where the room spun me to sleep.

The next morning I awoke, still feeling intoxicated as the patches do not suppress alcohol (thankfully). After grabbing a cup of Joe and whipping up some eggs and toast I found my body really rebounding from the night before. Normally hangover + exercise = booze sweats + nausea but not today, nor any of the days that I have used the patch. I actually went for a solid 8 km (5 mi) run that day and felt great afterwards. After going through 5 sessions with the hangover patch now I can tell you the results are very consistent.

Hangover Remedies: What’s in & What’s Out?

Posted on 31 October 2010 by admin

There are currently many remedies proposed to cure and heal the effect of hangover. There are the traditional homemade remedies and the modern scientifically proven remedies offered for the sufferers to try, in hope to eliminate the morning-after effects.

This article will briefly highlight what’s in and what’s out a.k.a which remedies are effective and which are ineffective.

THE “IN” REMEDIES

1) Drinking water or fruit juice

Water will help to rehydrate the body and replenish the lost moisture.

2) Diet with lots of mineral essentials

Alcohol dehydrate not only water but also the essential minerals and salts. Therefore, one should start eating healthy diet with lots of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and zinc.

3) Exercise

This may sounds almost impossible as one may not even able to get up from bed. Exercise can help the heart pump in blood all over the body and this increases the oxygen level in the body.

4) Vitamins

Taking vitamins such as Vitamin C and B12 help to speed up recovery and restore the body’s immune system.

5) Sleep

Enough rest is crucial to help the body to recover from the morning-after effect. Therefore make sure enough sleep is included in the must do hangover remedies.

THE “OUT” REMEDIES

1) Drinking caffeine.

Caffeine will only continues to dehydrate, so it is a definite no-no.

2) Narcotics and drugs

Narcotics along with alcohol or shortly after consumption is dangerous in itself because of added depressant effects on the central nervous system.

3) Drinking more alcohol

A very bad way of dealing with hangovers because of the strain it puts on the liver and stomach.

4) Hair of the dog

A famous remedy , that is to treat the wound of a dog bite with the hair of the dog that bit you. However, whenapplied to hangover, it means, if you have had too much, take a glass of the same wine the next morning to soothe the nerves. This won’t really work as it will further cause dehydration and might harm your body system severely.

To cure hangover, whether its a traditional the clinical remedy, one should really ask for opinions and see which one is the most suitable as these remedies may have different effects and effectiveness from one person to another.

Get over the hangover

Posted on 23 October 2010 by admin

Once in a while, it is good to let loose and have a little fun. Be it a bachelor party, a girls or boys night out, getting together with friends during the holidays, crashing a wedding with an open bar, it is ok to get a little crazy and have a few too many. While most people are willing to drink responsibly  or not at all because they happen to be the designated  driver, or have other responsibilities  such as getting up and bringing the kids to school, some of us  can end up getting carried away and going a little overboard only to regret it the next morning.

There is nothing like ringing in a new year by hugging a toilet seat and vowing “never again” or sitting around the next day nursing a headache and wishing everyone could just keep the damn noise down. Hangovers suck, especially the stomach aches, the throbbing head, and the aching muscles. Forcing yourself to live through the next day of getting the kids lunch or taking Fido out can be torture, but the worl is not going to sit by and patiently wait for you to feel better.

If only there was some secret miracle concoction out there that could whisk all the pain and suffering away. If only there were things that you could do before you go out and paint the town red that will limit the amount of regret the next day. Oh, wait a minute, there is.

First, here are some tips to help prevent a hangover:

Be sure to drink plenty of other fluid before going out and drinking. Alcohol dehydrates your system and those massive headaches the next day are actually your body’s way of telling you that it needs more water. Do your best not to mix different types of alcohol together. Different level of alcohol and sugar content can really upset your system . Do not mix alcohol with medication. This could lead to some serious complications. Bigger people can absorb more alcohol and younger folks have a tendency to tolerate it more. Men also have the capacity to handle more alcohol then women even if they are the same height and weight. The best way to avoid a hangover is to declare yourself a designated driver and not drink at all.

Okay, so now you have some guideline on how to best avoid a morning of regret. You are ready to go out. You start out with a cold beer, this loosens you up. You have another, then your long lost pal shows up and buys a round of shots. Not wanting to feel like a cheap skate, you find yourself getting a round. Next thing you know, you are trashed. Thankfully, someone took your car keys and called you a cab. You wake up the next day and realize you had not planned to drink so much and now you have a full blown hangover. Now what do you do.

What to do if you already have a hangover:

Do not drink more alcohol the next day. A little hair of the dog does not work and is never a good idea. Drink lots of water to help dilute the alcohol in your bloodstream. Headache medicines such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen can help. Just be aware that there is a danger of mixing drugs with alcohol. Having a good throw up session can help you purge some of the alcohol that has not yet been absorbed into your bloodstream. Just be sure to drink water too, since coffee is a diuretic and can make things worse, especially if you try to drink it before going to bed.

Now that you got your tips, go out there and have some fun. Just be sure to stay safe and never to drink and drive.

How to prevent a hangover; Hangovers from hell no more!

Posted on 21 October 2010 by admin

As a former energy drink model I have tried every energy drink on the market. Would you believe I found one that can actually prevent a hangover? Mix Energy Fizz powder and club soda with your favorite vodka and you won’t have a hang over in the morning.

Energy Fizz is an effervescent powder that mixes with water to create an amazing energy/sports drink with no sugar 0 calories! It’s loaded with B12 vitamins that will wake up your senses and give you a blast of energy!

Why it works?: The special vitamin formula creates a natural hangover prevention.

Vitamin B12 helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. Characteristic signs of a B12  deficiency include fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss.

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin. It performs a wide variety of functions in your body and is essential for your good health. It is also essential for red blood cell metabolism. The nervous and immune systems need vitamin B6 to function efficiently. Vitamin B6, through its involvement in protein metabolism and cellular growth, is important to the immune system.

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin easily absorbed from the small intestine. Humans are one of the few species that cannot manufacture Vitamin C.

Thiamin is involved in numerous body functions, including: nervous system and muscle functioning; flow of electrolytes in and out of nerve and muscle cells. Because there is very little thiamin stored in the body, depletion can occur as quickly as within 14 days.

Green Tea is reported to have antioxidant properties and the ability to protect against oxidative damage of red blood cells. Most of green tea’s therapeutic uses in humans are associated with its antioxidant activity. Antioxidants protect cells and tissues against free radical oxidative damage and injury.

5 Ways to Treat a Hangover, Seriously

Posted on 19 October 2010 by admin

We have all had that feeling; a headache so bad you have a second heartbeat that your co-workers can hear, last night’s vodka is seeping out of your pores and you cannot speak too quickly without getting nauseous. That’s right, you have a hangover. So now what? After many years of drinking, sometimes to excess, I have five different ways to treat a hangover.

Rest Get yourself into bed and relax. Your liver has worked hard all night long, even while you were passed out and your body needs to continue to recover.

Drink By drink I don’t mean alcohol, I mean water, fruit juice or sports drinks. They all have essential sugars and electrolytes that you have completely burned up already, so don’t listen to your buddies and crack a beer to start your day

Medications If your stomach isn’t too queasy, look to take an over the counter drug like aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but only if your stomach can handle it.

Exercise As bad as you feel, exercising will help to excrete the alcohol out of your body and allow your body to recover quicker. A brisk walk, jogging, biking, hiking, even sitting in a steam room for 15 minutes will help you. Sweat!

Prickly Pear Cactus Seriously? Yes. Researchers at Tulane University and University of California, San Francisco have found that prickly pear extract is proven to reduce inflammation, one of the main causes of hangovers.

Treating a hangover is not the type of thing you like to research, but sometimes your brain is so fried the next morning that you could use the help. There are plenty of ways to prevent a hangover, like drinking a glass of water between shots, and eating before and during drinking.

So, next time that you wake up in bed (or the bathroom floor) seeing triple and not able to move, remember what it takes to treat a hangover and move slowly.

How to Fix a Hangover in Two Easy Steps

Posted on 13 October 2010 by admin

It’s very easy to fix a hangover. It’s also totally painless. But first, let’s just recap the typical symptoms of a hangover.

Normally hangovers give you a headache. And these headaches are exacerbated by light (you just want to bury your head under the bed covers) and noise (noisy kids, the radio or TV  are liable to make you angry).

You are irritable because you’re sensitive to these disturbances which make your headache so much worse.

You’re cold. You’d much rather stay in a warm bed than even contemplate getting up and trying to act normally.

And you’re nauseous. Perhaps vomiting.

If these are the typical signs of a hangover for you, then just follow the following steps. This will, almost certainly, fix a hangover you subsequently get.

Step One.
When you next go shopping, go into your local health shop or visit a local homeopath. Buy a bottle of homeopathic Nux vomica.

The potency (strength) of the medicine (indicated by the number appearing after the name) will typically be 6c or 30c. It may also be 6x.

Put it somewhere safe, that is within easy reach when you feel lousy.

Step Two.
Next time you know you will be drinking, take a dose before you start, or before you go out.

As soon as you return, or your party is over, put one of the pillules (or drops) of the Nux vomica into a glass of water. Take a sip every few minutes. Take the glass to bed with you, so you can take a sip when you wake up.

While nothing in health (or life?) is ever 100%, this procedure comes as close as it gets. It is almost guaranteed to fix a hangover in minutes, as long as your symptoms fit the typical signs outlined above.

Easy Ways To Fight Hangover

Posted on 06 October 2010 by admin

It is not unusual to find an individual in a state of having a hangover, typically at parties; people overlook their restrictions and remain drinking continuously. By consuming relatively high amount alcohol, it is more likely to get involved in it the following morning. Hangover can occur to anybody no matter how frequent you drink alcohol. There are many signs of hangover and include intense headaches, dehydration, feelings of sickness, depression and sensitivities to loudness.

Firstly, we should be well aware of the reality that alcohol in disproportionate quantity is not good for one’s healthiness.  To create awareness among the public about the bad effects of consuming too much alcohol is necessary to promote anti hangover activities. You must have the knowledge regarding the causes of hangover. There are numerous reasons due to which you have to face the problem of hangover including its diuretic nature which removes too much water from the body and results in dehydration which ultimately results into dizziness and headaches. Moreover, this excessive production of urine also removes important nutrients such as minerals and vitamins from the body along with the removal of water. These salts are necessary for the proper functioning of the body and if not present in the body in appropriate amount can lead to the development of such hangover symptoms. So, supplementation of minerals and vitamins are effective for hangover relief.

Additionally, if you are fond of dark color alcohol then probabilities are great to get involved in hang over as compared to consuming light color alcohol. Similar is true for using white wine as compared to red wine. It is an established fact that it is very difficult to abstain completely from alcohol but it is worth trying for those who have to experience hangover regularly. There are many tablets for hangover relief, available in the market, which have proven effects against hangover and the famous among them is Paraxine which is used most commonly. The mechanism of its action is very simple to understand, it actually break almost half of the amount of alcohol present in your body within an hour and you start feeling better just half an hour after its consumption. In Paraxine a chemical compound I-e asparagines which magnetize the alcohol molecules and remove it from the body. Moreover, alcohol consume lots of proteins from the body and the rate of its usage is far greater than its production from the body that’s why a regular drinker not taking much care of his diet is always emaciated. It is therefore, continuous consumption of proteins while consuming alcohol is also helpful in hangover relief. Body and other associated organs become exhausted after the consumption of great deal of alcohols and therefore there should be a span of rest afterward to give most of the organs especially liver to repair the damages done to it. Recommended period is ranging from six to eight hours. Lastly, I may say that drinking is bad but excessive and unplanned drinking is worse and can bring lots of troubles in the life.

Hangover: A Menace Of The Morning

Posted on 04 October 2010 by admin

Terminology of hangover is derived from the heady feelings that follow an intense alcohol intake. Usually, hangovers are experienced while the brain returns to its appropriate physiological state i.e. after the harmful effects of alcohol. The common characters of hangovers are sensations of headaches, nausea, and at times stomach pains, lethargy and dizziness. These characteristics can vary from individual to individual. If someone is excessively sensitive to the alcohol then he might have to face certain other severe problems as well such as diarrhea, hyperthermia, pain in the joints and many more. So, there is dire need to think about how to prevent hangover.

Normally, human being used ethyl alcohol which is the main active constituent in any alcohol formulation. Ethyl Alcohol In its unadulterated form is a colorless fluid which is dissolvable in water without much effort. This is due to this reason that when alcohol hits the stomach it enters to the blood stream without too much trouble. Nervous impulses normally slow down when there is alcohol in the blood stream. That’s why a drunken individual experience such feelings. And if the feeling prolong till the next morning then it is called as hangover.

It is essential to prevent hangover because it not only spoil your day but also have too many bad effects on your health. During drinking there is loss of essential nutrients from the body such as vitamins and minerals. A long fight with hang over can bring your body under stress for a long time.

There are many therapies to prevent hangover. Primary and leading suggestion is to say no to drink if you have empty stomach this is the reason of establishment of appetizers and starters concepts. Carbohydrate diets are preferred such as a handsome portion of chips should be in your stomach when you are going to start drinking.  Carbohydrates delay the absorption of alcohol into the body because carbohydrates attach with the wall of the intestine and provide less opportunity for the alcohol molecules to absorb form there.

Caffeine and chocolate have synergistic effects on a hangover. Actually, sugar intake triggers the nerve impulses to regain its function. Taking caffeine immediately after alcohol may deteriorate the situation but having a big cup of coffee can help a lot to alleviate the situation.

Some people fight hangovers through consuming one more pag of the similar drink during the morning. Well what is the philosophy of behind this is not known but this helps really in relieving the effects of hangover. Similarly, having a nice breakfast such as omelets and bread with a large cup of coffee can give a great assist in the alleviation of the hangover feelings.

In a nutshell, I may say that one should be careful regarding challenges ahead the next morning and consume the quantity accordingly. If you drink with full stomach and increase intake of water while drinking then there are very few chances that you may have to face the hangover.

For the sake of Rugby Union, 2015 must be held elsewhere

Posted on 03 October 2010 by admin

On July 28th 2009 a decision will be made that may not only decide where the 2015 rugby World Cup will be, but it may also decide the future of World Rugby.

Thus far, the World Cup has been held in England, Wales, France, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. It will be held once more in New Zealand next year but it is after that where the IRB really need to look ahead and not just to 2015.

The countries that wish to host the World Cup in 2015 are South Africa, Japan, England and Italy. In my opinion it has got go to either Japan or Italy. Both can provide the stadiums and support to host such a tournament and it should not go to any of the big guns as it always has done.

Imagine, for example, the euphoria if held in the far east. Remember the football World Cup and Olympics of recent times. Large sporting events are practically bred for these far eastern countries becuase they can and always will deliver.

Imagine what this would do for countries yet untouched by rugby civilisation. It would create mass rugby exposure at a whole new level, let us be honest, the Rugby World Cup is in itself a massive event, but should coverage be held in Japan it would almost be a rugby epidemic that will reach to new heights.

Children from those areas will look up to the sport, will view rugby as the new social outlet, and, for the future, will create more players from different backgrounds with different skills. The next few world cups should be handed to these other countries so that the game as a whole can develop, imagine Rugby being played in the streets of Argentina like football is played in Brazilian streets, imagine the whole of Japan turning out to watch their local heroes play on home soil.

So for World Rugby’s sake please – IRB – let someone else have a go!

The top 10 online bookmakers currently make South Africa as favourites and England, as they will also be bidding for the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
